The skin's function
The skin is one of the most important parts of our body. Our skin gives us our sense of touch and protects us from external influences. It is important to treat your skin well. At the Mauritsklinieken, we take care of your skin's health.
Our skin has many functions: it ensures that we do not easily get overheated, under-cooled or dehydrated. We would not be able to survive without skin.
The skin, and in particular the skin on our face, is the first thing people see. If the skin does not look good, people can become very unsure of themselves. There are also many different skin diseases and conditions that can cause problems and discomfort in your day-to-day life.
The composition of the skin
The skin consists of three layers: the uppermost layer is called the epidermis. Underneath that is the dermis. The lowermost layer is the subcutaneous connective tissue, also known as the hypodermis. The hypodermis is a tissue that connects and supports other tissues and organs. Under the hypodermis is the fat layer.

The skin also contains skin appendages such as sebaceous glands, sweat glands, hair roots and places where the nails are produced.
The medical specialization that focuses on the skin is called dermatology. The doctors at the Mauritsklinieken, our dermatologists, are specialized in the treatment of every skin disease and condition. You can find an overview here of the various conditions and what the Mauritsklinieken can do for you.
